VACANCY

The University of Technology, Mauritius (UTM) invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates who wish to be considered for the following posts:

  1. Accounts Clerk
  2. Accounts Officer
  3. Clerk/ Word Processing Operator
  4. Human Resource Management Officer
  5. Internal Auditor
  6. Library Clerk (Roster)

Job Description / Scheme of Service

  1. ACCOUNTS CLERK

Minimum Qualification:

  1. (a) Cambridge School Certificate with credit in at least five subjects including English Language, French and Mathematics or Principles of Accounts obtained at not more than two sittings or

(b) Passes not below Grade C in at least five subjects including English Language, French and Mathematics or Principles of Accounts at not more than two sittings at the General Certificate of Education “Ordinary Level” provided that at one of the sittings passes have been obtained either (i) in five subjects including English Language with at least Grade C in any two subjects or (ii) in six subjects including English Language with at least Grade C in any one subject.

Note

Candidates not possessing a credit in English Language at the Cambridge School Certificate will also be considered provided they possess passes in at least two subjects at “Principal Level” and one subject at “Subsidiary Level” as well as the General Paper obtained on one certificate at the Cambridge Higher School Certificate Examinations.

  1. Either

(i) A pass at Principal Level in Accounting at the Cambridge Higher School

Certificate and at least two years’ experience in finance/audit duties.

Or

(ii) A pass in Accounting at Third Level of the London Chamber of Commerce and

Industry and at least two years’ experience in finance/audit duties.

Or

(iii) A Certificate in Book-Keeping (Level 2) formerly Intermediate Stage from London Chamber of Commerce and Industry with at least four years’ experience in finance/audit duties.

A Certificate in Spreadsheet or Knowledge of Computer Operation and standard packages is desirable.

2. ACCOUNTS OFFICER

Minimum Qualification:

  1. (a) Cambridge School Certificate with credit in at least five subjects including English Language, French and Mathematics or Principles of Accounts obtained at not more than two sittings or

(b) Passes not below Grade C in at least five subjects including English Language, French and Mathematics or Principles of Accounts obtained at not more than two sittings at the General Certificate of Education “Ordinary Level” provided that at one of the sittings passes have been obtained either (i) in five subjects including English Language with at least Grade C in any two subjects or (ii) in six subjects including English Language with at least Grade C in any one subject.

Note

Candidates not possessing a credit in English Language at the Cambridge School Certificate will also be considered provided they possess passes in at least two subjects at “Principal Level” and one subject at “Subsidiary Level” as well as the General Paper obtained on one certificate at the Cambridge Higher School Certificate Examinations.

  1. A Cambridge Higher School Certificate with passes at Principal Level in at least two subjects including Mathematics or Accounting obtained on one certificate or Passes in at least two subjects including Mathematics or Accounting obtained on one certificate at the General Certificate of Education “Advanced Level”.
  2. EITHER a Diploma in Public Financial Management and Accounting from a

recognized institution.

Or ACCA Level 1 (new Syllabus) plus 2 years’ experience in the grade of Accounts Clerk.

OR LCC Certificate in Bookkeeping and Accounting (Intermediate Stage) or IBK Certificate in Bookkeeping (Final Examination) plus 3 years satisfactory experience in the grade of Accounts Clerk.

OR

Equivalent qualifications to A, B and C above acceptable to the Board.

  1. CLERK/ WORD PROCESSING OPERATOR

Minimum Qualification:

  1. (i) Cambridge School Certificate with credit in at least five subjects including English Language, French and Mathematics or Principles of Accounts obtained at no more than two sittings or

(ii) Passes not below Grade C in a least five subjects including English Language, French and Mathematics or Principles of Accounts obtained at not more than two sittings at the General Certificate of Education “Ordinary Level” provided that at one of the sittings, passes have been obtained either (a) in five subjects including English Language with at least Grade C in any two subjects or (b) in six subjects including English Language with at least Grade C in any one subject.

Note

Candidates not possessing a credit in English Language at the Cambridge School Certificate will also be considered provided they possess passes in at least two subjects at “Principal Level” and one subject at “Subsidiary Level” as well as the General Paper obtained on one certificate at the Cambridge Higher School Certificate Examinations.

  1. A Cambridge Higher School Certificate or passes in at least two subjects obtained on

one certificate at the General Certificate of Education “Advanced Level”.

OR Equivalent qualifications to A and B acceptable to the Board.

  1. A Certificate in keyboarding or typewriting with a speed of at least 25 words a minute

from a recognized institution.

  1. A Certificate in Word Processing or Data Processing from a recognized institution.
  2. Candidates should –

(i) possess good communication skills; and (ii) have a positive attitude towards work; and (iii) have a general knowledge of national and international issues.

Qualifications at A above should have been obtained prior to qualification B above.

Candidates should produce written evidence of knowledge claimed.

NOTE 1

Candidates not possessing qualification at C above will also be considered provided they can type/ operate a keyboard efficiently at a speed of at least 25 words a minute. They will be required to undergo a test arranged by the University of Technology, Mauritius.

NOTE 2

Candidates not possessing qualification at D above will also be considered provided they can operate a computer and make use of word processing and data processing packages. They will be required to undergo a test arranged by the University of Technology, Mauritius.

  1. HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Minimum Qualification:

  1. A Degree in Human Resource Management from a recognized institution or an

equivalent qualification acceptable to the Board.

  1. Candidates should-

(i) reckon at least five years’ post-qualification experience in the field of Human

Resource Management; (ii) have sound knowledge of human resource policies and practices and of the latest

trends in human resource management; (iii) have good communication and interpersonal skills; (iv) have the ability to work effectively as a team leader; and (v) be computer literate.

5. INTERNAL AUDITOR

Minimum Qualification:

  1. Candidates should be a member of one of the following bodies –

(a) The Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales; (b) The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland; (c) The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ireland; (d) The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants; (e) The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants; (f) The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy;

OR an equivalent professional accountancy qualification acceptable to the Board.

  1. Candidates should also –

(i) reckon at least three years’ post-qualification experience in auditing; (ii) possess good problem-solving and analytical skills; (iii) possess good interpersonal and communication skills; and (iv) be computer literate.

  1. LIBRARY CLERK (ROSTER)

Minimum Qualification:

  1. (i) a Cambridge School Certificate with credit in at least five subjects including English Language, French and Mathematics or Principles of Accounts obtained on one certificate or passes not below Grade C in a least five subjects including English Language, French and Mathematics or Principles of Accounts obtained on one certificate at the General Certificate of Education “Ordinary Level” or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Board.

Note

Candidates not possessing a credit in English Language at the Cambridge School Certificate will also be considered provided they possess passes in at least two subjects at “Principal Level” and one subject at “Subsidiary Level” as well as the General Paper obtained on one certificate at the Cambridge Higher School Certificate Examinations.

(ii) the Certificate in Information and Library Studies of the University of Mauritius or the Certificate in Library and Information Science of the City and Guilds of London Institute or the Certificate in Librarianship and Information Science of the Mauritius College of the Air.

OR

Equivalent qualifications to (i) and (ii) above acceptable to the Board.

  1. Candidates should be computer literate.

Experience/Knowledge claimed: Candidates should produce written evidence of experience/knowledge claimed.

Appointment will be on the Permanent and Pensionable Establishment of the University, subject to a probationary period as per established procedures.

Age Limit: Candidates, unless already in the Public Sector or Parastatal Bodies, should not have reached their 40th birthday by the closing date of this advertisement.

Duties:

To prepare payment of Salaries Mages, Travel Grant. Travelling/Travelling Allowances. Overtime, Crediiors and all other charges bills.

To write up Cash Book, make entries in Ledger and journal. and maintain Books of Accounts, Records and Cards.

To prepare Bank Reconciliation Statement and Statistical and other returns

To attend to banking transacions.

To be responsible for the despach of cheques.

To perform such cognate duties as may be assigned.
