First cyclone bulletin for Mauritius issued at 1610 hours on Monday 15 January  2018.

At 1600 hours, tropical cyclone ‘BERGUITTA’ was centered at about 590 km to the East North East of Mauitius, that is, in latitude 17.8 degrees South and longitude 62.9 degrees East. Its movement is currently erratic but there are indications that it will move slowly in a general West North West direction later during the night. Thereafter, most numerical models are recurving it towards the South West in a trajectory that will bring the centre in the vicinity of Mauritius. In this scenario tropical cyclone ‘BERGUITTA’ represent a threat to Mauritius.

Therefore, a cyclone warning class I is in force in Mauritius.

The public in Mauritius is advised to take preliminary precautions.

Weather in Mauritius will be partly cloudy to cloudy with passing showers mainly over the high grounds and the windward slopes. The showers will be more frequent and widespread as from tomorrow.

Wind will blow from the South East at about 40 km/h in the mean, strengthening
gradually. The gusts may reach 100 km/h tonight.

Sea will be very rough. It is advised not to venture at sea.

Note: As tropical cyclone ‘BERGUITTA’ continues to intensify and approaches Mauritius, the warning may be upgraded to class II tomorrow morning at 0400 hours.

Rodrigues PRESS RELEASE OF THE WEATHER FOR RODRIGUES ISSUED AT 4:15 PM MONDAY, JANUARY 15, 2018.  

GENERAL SITUATION:

(A) No cyclone warning is in effect in Rodrigues. Neanmois, a notice of strong wind and strong swell is in force in Rodrigues and will be valid until 19:00 this Tuesday, January 16, 2018.

(B) At 1600 hours, tropical cyclone ‘BERGUITTA’ was centered about 230 km north-northwest of Rodrigues, at latitude 17.8 degrees south and longitude 62.9 degrees east. It moves west-northwest and begins to slowly move away from Rodrigues.

FORECAST FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS:

Cloudy to cloudy this night with intermittent rains, moderate at times, accompanied by thunderstorms mainly on the heights. The minimum temperature will be between 19 and 22 degrees Celsius.   The sky will remain cloudy and sometimes cloudy with occasional showers. The minimum temperature will be between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius.   Wind from the east at a speed of 50 km / h with gusts of up to 100 km / h in exposed areas.   Strong and stormy sea. Outings at sea are strictly discouraged.
