Applications are invited from prospective candidates for enrolment on the Basic/Introductory Course in Communication and Mass Media as from the Academic Year 2018/2019:

One of the main preoccupation facing educational institutions today is to impart essential employability skills. Indeed, high on the academic agenda of tertiary institutions is the commitment to supplement elements of practical and professional training to address the problem of mis-match in the labour market and ultimately gear the younger generation towards a better job prospect.

At the top of the list of the 21st century skills which students need to develop is communication. The latter being closely associated with media in all its forms developing basic knowledge of mass communication is most relevant.

This short course is designed for learners to acquire knowledge and skills in communication and mass media and improve their confidence and fluency in communicating. It aims at developing basic skills in written and verbal reporting, storytelling and editing, using multimedia visual communication platforms technology. This course offers basic training in effective communication skills that employers are looking for. Furthermore, it prepares the students to be effective communicators, to analyze and explain information to a wide variety of audiences through different media channels.

The aim of the course is to:

  • provide students with the basic principles of communication and
  • develop verbal and non-verbal, oral and written communication skills using different communication media and technologies

4. Entry Requirements

(a) A pass in English Language at Cambridge School Certificate/ ‘O’ Level or equivalent and credit

in three (3) other subjects at Cambridge School Certificate/ GCE ‘O’ Level and

(Applicants having credit in English language need to have credit in only two other subjects.)

(b) Passes in at least two subjects at Advanced Level


(c) An equivalent qualifications acceptable to the Mahatma Gandhi Institute

  • Applications should be made on the prescribed forms obtainable during office hours, from the Reception Counters, SMAS Building, Mahatma Gandhi Institute, Moka and the Rabindranath Tagore Institute, Ilot. Applicants may also download a printable Application Form from the Mahatma Gandhi Institute & Rabindranath Tagore Institute website:


  • Application forms, duly filled in, must be returned together with photocopies of birth certificate, marriage certificate (where applicable) and educational certificates so as to reach the Director General’s Office, Mahatma Gandhi Institute, Moka 80808, not later than Friday 16 November 2018.
  • Mature Candidates may also apply for the course. If they wish to be considered as mature candidate, they have to tick the relevant box in the application form and attach documentary evidence with regard to work experience.
  • Applications received after the closing date and/or not supported by the relevant documents will not be considered.
  • The Mahatma Gandhi Institute reserves the right not to run the course if the number of registered students is not sufficient.
  • Documents submitted will not be returned to applicants.
