World Environment Day
World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on 5 June following a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. WED is the principal vehicle of the United Nations for encouraging worldwide awareness and actions for the protection of environment. It is in fact the biggest environmental event celebrated worldwide. Activities ranging from clean-ups, action against wildlife crime, to replanting forests are undertaken around the world to mark the event.

WED 2019 Theme
This year, the focus for WED 2019 is on Air Pollution which calls upon governments, the private sector, Non-Governmental Organisations, local communities and individuals to come together to explore renewable energy and green technology opportunities to improve air quality in every region of the world.
According to the United Nations Environment, about 7 million people worldwide die prematurely each year from air pollution. Air pollution equally impacts on our natural environment. Many air pollutants are greenhouse gases (GHGs) and contribute to the negative impacts of climate change.
In Mauritius, the total GHG emissions from different sectors have increased by 5 % from 2014 to 2017. World Environment Day 2019 will provide an opportunity to enhance awareness on this important issue, which is one of our country’s most pressing environmental concerns.
