Jessica Curpen: The art of handbags and handmade baskets “I love handbags since I was a teenager. I wanted to become a stylist, but for lack of finances I had to give up but I continue to follow the trend of the moment, I buy at least two models of bags a week that I add to my collection. My unconditional love for this fashion accessory encouraged me to become an artisan. I have been making handbags and baskets for almost 35 years, making them with Vacoas leaves. For decoration, I use a lot of my creativity to make the handbags and baskets interesting and fashionable of the day. I use colored beads, pieces of cloth, ribbons, paint, among others. Building requires a lot of effort. The leaves of Vacoas are first cut, then dried in the sun and then relaxed. Afterwards, they are cut into very thin strips with a small knife, in the direction of the height. Once prepared, I begin making the basket or handbag. I like to innovate and propose new creations to my clients. I also create custom baskets and handbags. Customers can burn their initial and even their name. My clients are mostly tourists who visit the Port Louis market. I like to welcome them and start a chat with them. The price of my handbags and baskets vary between Rs 150 and Rs 500. Every day, I start my day with peps, because this work is my passion even if it is not always obvious. I have to open my shop at the market at 9:00 and I have to stay here until 17:00 to find customers. My shop is too small so that I can also make my baskets and handbags, I have to stay on my legs in search of customers and invite them to come see my bags, because it does not happen a minute without it there are no visitors. I am a mother of three sons and, at home, I have to busy myself with household chores and cook and it is during the weekend that I make my bags. When I sell a handbag, I am happy that my creation has conquered the eyes of a few and it will bear my creation … ”
