Is Mauritius playing irresistible? The Mauritian Republic, invisible on the map of the world cinema, would have become in some arrangements among friends one of the most attractive places in the world to shoot a feature film. The buzz of the shooting of the movie Serenity – the first Hollywood production in history to be shot on Mauritian soil next week between Trou aux Biches, Mont Choisy and the East Coast – will surely not be a flash of straw . Hollywood is likely to return, and it is the whole island that could benefit. Explanations.
This island is therefore Mauritius! And yet … Serenity was originally scheduled in the Caribbean, but the tight scheduling of lead actor Matthew Mcconaughey and the hurricanes of that time would have been the reason for the favorite place of US “tropical” productions (with Hawaii). The other explanation is to be sought in a key measure by the Mauritian government to support film production on the island (Allélulia!): The famous “Film Rebate Scheme” introduced in 2013 and then improved. Specifically, the measure can cover up to 40% of the expenses related to the production of a film (after validation of the project by BOI – Board of Investment ). A measure unique in the world, for an exceptional attractiveness. The international advertising market has already thrown itself on this beautiful gift and Bollywood naturally began to take an interest in it. According to the BOI 50 films have already benefited from this tax advantage, for 750 million rupees injected into the Mauritian economy. This is only a timid start. In a few weeks an episode of Killing the Cure , an English series, will be shot on the island, just like the one in another series, South African this time. Especially, with the feature Serenity and its budget of $ 20 million, the BOI figure will explode. The production of the film plans to save thanks to the “Film Rebate Scheme” 7 million dollars! If the performances on the Mauritian soil follow (quality of teams, equipment, infrastructures, reception …
Here is some glimpse of how the shooting is going on:
