Internet: Breakage – the SAFE cable slows the operators’ services

By | July 14, 2017

Have you found that your internet connection is slow? The SAFE fiber optic submarine cable was broken on the evening of Wednesday 12 July. Telephony operators have seen their internet services reduced. However, this is not the first time this has happened.

The eastern part of Africa is currently affected. Emtel operator issued a statement on Thursday (July 13th) to announce the difficulties to offer an optimal service. According to one source, the operator is at 50% of its capacity, thus explaining the slowness of the connection. Emtel benefits from the bandwidth on the LION cable. The other operators evaluate, at this time, the impact on their services. This breakdown also affects companies in outsourcing services.

The island of Réunion and the other countries connected to the SAFE and related cables are also affected. So far no indication has been given as to reparation. According to the site magazap.com, work on cable LION will begin this Saturday, July 15. This will affect Mauritian Internet users.

At the level of Mauritius Telecom, repair work is currently underway and in the meantime the Internet service may experience some disruptions.

Mauritius Telecom argues that all arrangements have been made to redirect Internet traffic to other submarine cables and the situation should return to normal shortly.
